What are the best things to do in Sisimiut?
Sisimiut offers signature Arctic experiences year-round, including dog sledding, snowmobiling, northern lights tours, hiking, whale watching and cultural experiences.
During winter, Sisimiut is known for authentic Greenlandic adventures, while summer is popular for hiking the Arctic Circle Trail and exploring the surrounding fjords. Hotel SØMA Sisimiut is a convenient base for discovering the town and nearby nature.
Can you see the Northern Lights in Sisimiut?
Yes — Sisimiut is one of the best places in Greenland to experience the Northern Lights.
From September to April, dark Arctic skies and minimal light pollution create excellent conditions for seeing the aurora borealis. Many visitors combine Northern Lights experiences with winter activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling around Sisimiut.
If you are lucky you might be able to catch a glimpse of Northern Lights from our Arctic Spa or the Northern Lights Lounge.
Is Sisimiut good for the Arctic Circle Trail?
Yes — Sisimiut is the starting or ending point of the famous Arctic Circle Trail, one of Greenland’s most popular long-distance hiking routes.
Many hikers stay in Sisimiut before or after the trek to prepare, rest and explore the town. During summer, Sisimiut is an excellent destination for hiking, outdoor adventures and experiencing Greenlandic nature.

How do I get to Hotel SØMA Sisimiut from the airport or harbor?
Hotel SØMA Sisimiut is located approximately 15 minutes by car from Sisimiut Airport. Taxis are usually available outside the airport upon arrival. The hotel is also conveniently located near the harbor, which is only about 5–8 minutes away on foot.
Guests with luggage can also choose to take a taxi from the harbor to the hotel.
How many days should you stay in Sisimiut?
Most visitors stay in Sisimiut between 3 and 5 days to experience both Arctic activities and local culture.
This allows time for adventures such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, hiking or Northern Lights excursions, while also exploring Sisimiut’s museums, restaurants and surrounding nature. Longer stays are recommended for travelers hiking the Arctic Circle Trail.
What should I pack for Sisimiut in winter?
Winter in Sisimiut can be cold and snowy, so warm layered clothing is essential.
Guests should bring insulated winter jackets, waterproof boots, gloves, hats and thermal layers for outdoor activities. Hotel SØMA borrows warm overalls and boots to guests going dog sledding and snowmobiling. Weather conditions in Sisimiut can change quickly, especially during Arctic winter months.
Is early check-in or late check-out possible at Hotel SØMA Sisimiut?
Yes, Hotel SØMA offers early check-in and late-check-out, depending on the occupancy.
Early check-in at Hotel SØMA Sisimiut cannot always be guaranteed, as room availability depends on departures and housekeeping schedules. However, guests are welcome to check in early if their room is ready before the official check-in time. Late check-out may also be available depending on occupancy, and guests can contact the reception during their stay for availability.
Is housekeeping service included at Hotel SØMA Sisimiut?
Yes, housekeeping is available on request, due to our sustainability policy.
Guests staying at Hotel SØMA Sisimiut should place the housekeeping sign on their door before 9:00 AM if they would like their room cleaned during the day. Extra towels, toiletries or additional assistance can be requested from the reception in the evening.
Is there a spa at Hotel SØMA Sisimiut?
Yes, Hotel SØMA Sisimiut has an outdoor Arctic Spa and Sauna area, accessible all-year round.
SØMA Arctic Spa is the perfect place to unwind after a day of Arctic adventures. Spa entrance costs 400 DKK, though only 300 DKK for staying guests and the entrance includes a towel, bathrobe, shampoo, conditioner and slippers.
Is there a restaurant at Hotel SØMA Sisimiut?
Yes, Hotel SØMA Sisimiut has vibrant café and seasonal gourmet restaurant under one roof.
Café SØMA Sisimiut is opened daily and no table booking is needed. Restaurant SØMA Sisimiut on the other hand, is closed during winter months and table booking is advised. You can find both menus here.
