Hotel Assistant for Hotel SØMA Ilulissat

We are looking for Hotel Assistants to our beautiful hotel in Ilulissat, Greenland for the 2024 summer season. You will play a key role in the daily running of the hotel, gain comprehensive experience from the hotel industry and last, but not least, the wildest nature adventures are waiting for you right outside your door. Hotel SØMA Ilulissat is a breakfast hotel with 22 rooms. In high season, the team consists of 4-5 employees. As our new Hotel Assistant, you will play a key role in the daily running of the hotel.

Task Examples

This is a full-time position and your tasks will be very diverse – every day will be different. You will receive thorough training in each task and in how to run a successful hotel on a practical level. 

  • Morning shifts: You will tend to the breakfast restaurant, do the dishes and keep the restaurant nice and clean followed by cleaning and own-check.
  • House Cleaning: Rooms where the guest will be staying is to be tidied and cleaned up. Rooms where the guest has checked-out is to be cleaned and made ready for new guests.
  • Administration: Responsible for internal activities, reception work, ordering and pick-up of goods, answering emails and odd administrative work such as inventory, follow-up, etc.
  • Practical tasks: Pick-up goods, snow clearing, tidying, pick-up and delivery of food, guest transportation and all-round maintenance of hotel facilities. 
  • Conferences and tourism: Conference Host and on a rare occasion as well as guide on simple tourist excursions. 

We Imagine That You

  • Speak English well. Other languages are an advantage.
  • Have a driver’s license.
  • Have vocational or other high school level education.
  • Are familiar with the Microsoft Office package.
  • Have applicable experience from the service industry (an advantage, but not a requirement).

Scope of This Position

Work hours vary between morning, day and evening shifts. We schedule at least two weeks ahead. Shifts on weekends and holidays are to be expected. The average workweek is 40-50 hours, however with a high level of flexibility. 

We are looking for a Hotel Assistant on a fixed-term work contract from June 1st to December 15th 2024. Afterwards, continuing at one of our other hotels may be an option. 

This position is to be considered a regular job where you will gain experience and skills which you can add to your resume. 

About Hotel SØMA: Small Hotel – Great Community

Hotel SØMA Ilulissat is a tourist hotel located in the tourist capital of Greenland, Ilulissat. We are part of Greenland’s oldest hotel chain with more than 50 years of serving guests in this beautiful country. In Ilulissat, we are a small team of three people on the permanent staff, supplied by two Hotel Assistants in high season. The Seaman’s Home’s outreach work in Ilulissat has its outset from the hotel and one of the permanent staff members is our Seaman’s Missionary who carries out Christian charity work among sailors and fishermen in Ilulissat. Two mornings per week, we come together for a short devotion and prayer, besides that we eat lunch together.

Lots of Adventures

Ilulissat is the third largest city in Greenland and offers lots of opportunities to explore Greenland. By the Icefjord, you can experience the majestic icebergs and go for a hike in this unique UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also hike north and visit the Oqaatsut settlement. 
During winter, you will find lots of opportunities to go on snowmobiles and cross-country skiing. Ilulissat has frequent connections to the other settlements of the Disko Bay by boat, plane and helicopter so it is easy to go out and explore other places in Greenland. 
Ilulissat has a rich cultural life with societies, cafes, cultural center, museums, etc. and it is easy to meet new people. Moreover, there are many internationals in the city.
